INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY IN NEVADA

WHEREAS, the rich culture and unique experiences of indigenous people have added to the story of our nation; and;

WHEREAS, the contributions of indigenous people to our society have significantly improved the freedom, prosperity, and diversity of America today; and;

WHEREAS, the thriving culture and significant value of indigenous people is a legacy that adds to the history of the State of Nevada and the United States of America; and;

WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to celebrate the culture, traditions, and customs of indigenous people, while also remembering and reflecting on the hardships they have faced; and;

WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of Native Americans to the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas sponsored by the United Nations; and;

WHEREAS, there are over 476 million indigenous people in the world, living across 90 countries and representing 5,000 different cultures, according the United Nations; and;

WHEREAS, the Silver State is home to the Great Basin American Indian tribes, the Washoe, Northern Paiute, Southern Paiute, Western Shoshone and Mojave which encompass 28 Tribal Nations, Bands and Colonies, each having unique traditions and identities that span generations; and;

WHEREAS, on December 23, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 49/214 in which it named August 9 each year as International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim August 9, 2024, as

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY IN NEVADA
